Halotherapy (salt therapy in a salt room) is not covered by basic health insurance in the Netherlands, but a growing number of supplementary insurance policies partially reimburse it under the heading of alternative or complementary medicine. Halotherapy and your health insurance
Halotherapy is a complementary treatment method: a non-medicinal support for respiratory and skin complaints such as asthma, COPD, hay fever, bronchitis, eczema, and psoriasis. As it is not a regular medical treatment, it is not covered by basic health insurance.
Many health insurers do offer reimbursement for 'alternative' or 'complementary' medicine in their supplementary packages. Whether halotherapy specifically falls under your package depends on:
- your health insurer and the chosen supplementary package;
- the recognition of the practitioner through a professional association or umbrella organization;
- the maximum amount per treatment and the annual maximum in your policy.
Tip: Insurers change their conditions annually (as of January 1). Therefore, check each year whether halotherapy is still included in your policy and at what amount.
How to check your reimbursement in 5 minutes
Submitting an invoice to your insurer
If you are eligible for reimbursement, you can easily claim your sessions at HaloClinic Nederland with your supplementary insurance. You pay for the treatment yourself first, receive a specified invoice from us, and submit it digitally via your health insurer's app or portal.
The invoice will always include:
- your name and address details;
- the date and description of the treatment (halotherapy / salt therapy);
- the amount paid and the payment method;
- the details of HaloClinic Nederland.
Request an invoice in advance when booking or at the reception, and we will prepare it for you immediately after your session.
Employer, vitality budget, and tax
Employer & vitality budget
Many employers provide a personal health or vitality budget (PGB / WKR). Halotherapy fits well within prevention or reintegration programs for stress, burnout, or respiratory complaints. Ask your HR or occupational health service if reimbursement is possible.
Tax deduction for specific healthcare costs
Treatments prescribed or referred by a doctor can, under certain conditions, count as specific healthcare costs in your income tax return. Consult the Belastingdienst (Dutch tax authority) or your tax advisor for your personal situation.
