Halotherapy for cystic fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a chronic hereditary condition in which thick, sticky mucus builds up in the lungs and airways. This often causes tightness of the chest, chronic coughing, mucus and recurring lung infections.
At HaloClinic Nederland many visitors experience that halotherapy helps them loosen mucus more easily, breathe more freely and keep the airways cleaner.
HaloClinic Nederland has been among the first professional salt rooms in the Netherlands since 2011 and has been helping visitors with chronic airway and skin complaints for more than 15 years.
What is cystic fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary condition in which the body produces thick, sticky mucus. The lungs and airways are especially affected. Mucus lingers more easily, giving bacteria and infections a greater chance to develop.
Many people with cystic fibrosis experience:
- Chronic coughing
- Stubborn mucus
- Tightness of the chest
- Shortness of breath
- Reduced lung function
- Recurring lung infections
- Fatigue
- Wheezing
- Nasal and sinus complaints
Because mucus is difficult to clear, the airways often remain irritated and prone to inflammation.

How can halotherapy help with cystic fibrosis?
Halotherapy recreates the microclimate of a natural salt cave. During the session a professional halogenerator disperses fine, dry salt particles throughout the room. While you sit or lie back and relax, you inhale this air naturally. The salt particles reach the airways and nose, where they kill bacteria, help dissolve mucus and support the immune system in regulating itself.
Many visitors with cystic fibrosis experience that halotherapy can help to:
- Loosen stubborn mucus more easily
- Cough up mucus more easily
- Breathe more freely
- Cleanse the airways more thoroughly
- Take deeper breaths
- Feel more air and energy
- Experience more relaxation
- Keep the nose and sinuses more open
Many visitors also report feeling fitter after several sessions in the salt room.
Why do many people with cystic fibrosis use salt therapy?
Support for mucus clearance
In cystic fibrosis mucus often lingers in the airways for long periods. Many visitors experience that halotherapy helps loosen mucus so it can be coughed up more easily.
Dry salt aerosol deep in the airways
The microscopically fine dry salt particles disperse deep through the airways and are experienced by many visitors as pleasant when dealing with mucus and tightness.
A calm, relaxing environment
During a 60-minute session, body and breathing can come fully to rest.
Research into salt therapy and cystic fibrosis
Scientific studies into salt therapy and hypertonic saline in cystic fibrosis show that salt can contribute to better mucus clearance and airway support. A well-known study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that inhaling hypertonic saline improved mucus clearance and lung function in patients with cystic fibrosis.
Pilot studies into halotherapy also show positive results in terms of:
- Mucus clearance
- Breathing
- Lung function
- Quality of life with chronic airway problems
In addition, research has been carried out at HaloClinic Nederland in cooperation with Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam into visitors' experiences with halotherapy.
Visitor experiences with chronic airway complaints
Many visitors of HaloClinic Nederland with chronic airway problems report improvement in:
- Stubborn mucus
- Tightness of the chest
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Pressure on the chest
- Nasal and airway complaints
Visitors mention, among others:
- “More air”
- “Mucus comes away more easily”
- “I breathe more freely”
- “I feel fitter”
- “My airways feel cleaner”
Halotherapy and mucus in the lungs
In cystic fibrosis thick mucus plays a major role in airway problems. Research into salt therapy shows that salt can help support mucociliary clearance — that is, the removal of mucus from the airways.
Many visitors experience that halotherapy helps to:
- Loosen mucus
- Take deeper breaths
- Clear the airways more effectively
- Feel more air during daily activities

Can halotherapy help with mucus in the lungs?
Many visitors report that mucus comes away more easily and that they can breathe more freely after several sessions.
How many sessions are usually needed?
This differs per person and per severity of the symptoms. Many visitors opt for several sessions spread out over a few weeks.
Is halotherapy relaxing?
Yes, many visitors find a session in the salt room calming and relaxing.
What are the outcomes of the VU research into halotherapy?
Halotherapy research: 9 out of 10 clients fully stopped their medication. An independent study by Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, carried out at HaloClinic Nederland, shows striking results for people with airway and skin conditions.
